I am free.
I am self-aware.
I accept my emotions.
I allow my emotions to flow freely.
I express my emotions freely and openly.
If you need to take some time to repeat those affirmations again, please do so.

If you are like most of the world, you may get tired of hearing “How are you?” Or “How are you doing?” Simply, you may not even have an answer. On one hand, you may feel overwhelmed, and on the other hand, you may feel excited. But really, who keeps an emotion chart in their backpocket? My guess is not too many people. So, during this time of COVID-19, I challenge you to be a little more self-aware of you. If you are on the front lines, an essential worker, a parent, a student, working from home, trying not to pull your hair out, or just relaxing, you can benefit from a little emotional awareness. It doesn’t mean that you need a solution; it just means to be aware of your inner being.
Here are 8 journal prompts or conversation starters that can help you and others tap into emotions.
- The Weather— Which type of weather forecast would describe you right now?
- Song/Lyric — How would you describe your current emotional state using a song title or a song lyric? Why?
- Haiku— Write a haiku that describes you. Haikus are usually about nature or something similar. It is a 3 line poem. The first line is 5 syllables, the second line is 7 syllables, and the third line is 5 syllables. You can use this in a journal prompt. It’s also a fun way to challenge your family during dinner time or have a competition with your spouse on who can create the best haiku. Have each other explain what they think their partner’s emotional state is.
- Draw— Set your timer to 2-5 minutes and just doodle. Draw whatever that comes. Allow your hand to just move and release. Then, look at it. What did you draw? Why? What does your drawing say about your current emotional state?
- Colors of the Rainbow— Name a color that describes you. Why did you choose that specific color? What is your desired color? Why? What small steps do you think you can take to help you reach your desired state?
- Animals at the Zoo/Wilderness— Name an animal that describes how you are currently feeling. Why?
- 3-2-1– Name 3 things that you are grateful for. Name 2 things that didn’t go well today. Name 1 thing that you need right now or 1 thing that makes you happy.
- The Percentage— By using a percentage (%) of 0 – 100, how are you feeling? With 0 = Absolutely do not feel like living and 100 = I’m happy and living my best life. Then, journal about why you are at that specific %. If you are at 0, please call this hotline, 1-800-273-TALK.
The aforementioned prompts can help you to dig deeper into your inner self. Do not judge what you write. Do not judge the way you feel. You are allowed to feel your emotions. Don’t deny them, but observe them. Thank them for being present because it means you are human. Then, allow them to flow through you.
**These prompts can be used with your family (kids and adults) to start the social-emotional conversation. Choose accordingly to age and the appropriate situation.**
